FOR
THE BIOREGION and Beyond

"Call for emergence
of a human sustainable lifestyle is not out of guilt, shame,
judgment, or sacrifice – it's about a strategic, enlightened,
reduction in use of resources, and a corresponding, deliberate
increase in efficiency, quality, equity, stewardship, trust,
and teamwork."

The
Cascade Bioregion is an area defined by natural boundaries
in the northwestern region of North America. Each drop
of rain or snow flake is a starting point for seeing
the shape of our region in a new light. Raindrops build
streams, and streams are nudged this way and that by
the contours of the land. Tracing ridgelines across
the landscape, our maps reveal a jigsaw pattern of
drainage areas – watersheds. If we piece those
watersheds together, we arrive at a larger geography
defined by the life and culture it supports – the
Cascade Bioregion, part of “Salmon
Nation” – along
the Pacific Coast of North America, from the California
redwoods north to the Arctic Ocean.

It’s
a land
where individualism and the environment
are respected. It is the home of radical
environmentalists
and people
who feel
close to the land and water. It is a place
where natural resources are revered
and as a result flourish. But it is also the
home of Boeing Airlines, Microsoft, and
major lumbering
activities. Cascadia individualism is expressed
in the love of things strange and foreign
(i.e., holistic
medicine, solar energy, and other weird things).
It was also one of the hotbeds of the 60’s
generation.
