for a Better Future

"Call for emergence of a human sustainable lifestyle is not out of guilt, shame, judgment, or sacrifice – it's about a strategic, enlightened, reduction in use of resources, and a corresponding, deliberate increase in efficiency, quality, equity, stewardship, trust, and teamwork."

Vision of Sustainability Now!
All communities in the Cascade Bioregion (Pacific Northwest of U.S. & Canada) collectively embrace the environmental, cultural, and economic significance of “Salmon Nation” and achieve self-sufficiency and sustainability through decision-making and policy-setting that is supported by the continued accumulation of knowledge from the application of sustainability science to the concerns and problems that face this Bioregion, by leading or acting in concert with actions and solutions at the global scale.

The concept of “Salmon Nation” inspires changes in human behavior for the benefit of salmon and watersheds in the Cascade Bioregion because salmon are the “common thread” of this region. Our vision guides us to integrate science, conservation, and socio-economic improvement programs in a generally understandable way for (1) communicating information on, (2) invigorating public interest in, and (3) providing sound guidance for sustainable action taking without delay.

Progress toward achieving this vision is inspired by a number of goals Sustainability Now! has set for the next several years that include:

  • develop a renewed commitment to community capacity building and the regional networking of communities;
  • advance the concept and value of bioregion for taking action that is more in synchrony with the natural world and more able to effect desires for achieving sustainability;
  • promote a regional economy that binds communities together and keeps people and planet healthy while making money;
  • serve as a catalyst for social and political change for the purpose of keeping wealth at home in local communities, preserving and enriching the natural systems of water, air, and land, and practicing ways of living that foster sustainable socio-economic endeavors;
  • advance the ethics, thinking, and governing of corporations to ensure they serve societal and planetary interests for health and sustainability;
  • pioneer new modes of relatedness to the mystery and wonder of the natural world;
  • advance the application of the emerging field of sustainability science to enhance more sound problem-solving, decision-making, and policy-setting for those communities wanting to address concerns for sustainable development; and
  • encourage a new, more tolerant spiritual awareness that will allow society the opportunity to more effectively navigate the challenges of sustainability.
