"Call for emergence
of a human sustainable lifestyle is not out of guilt, shame,
judgment, or sacrifice – it's about a strategic, enlightened,
reduction in use of resources, and a corresponding, deliberate
increase in efficiency, quality, equity, stewardship, trust,
and teamwork."

Traditional
approaches to solving problems don’t support
prevention, but only encourage intervention. Practicing
sustainable development looks beyond solving problems
one at a time, to circumstances where people develop
far-reaching, multi-sector solutions and systems that
prevent problems from occurring. Through awareness,
holistic vision, and design, people can be socially
conscious and healthy, economically viable, and environmentally
responsible.
The mission of Sustainability
Now! speaks
to advancing progress in sustainable development
now rather than
later. This mission is supported by the ideals we have as an organization. The urgency of
finding sustainable solutions to global
issues such as climate change, water shortages, poverty,
general environmental degradation, failing economies,
energy demands, natural resource depletion, declining
fisheries, and struggles between the haves and have
nots, calls for the ability of an organization to
cross disciplines, overcome barriers, and address
the needs of multi-stakeholder groups in assisting
society at all levels of institutional organization
to succeed in achieving their self-defined sustainability
goals. We do this through community facilitation,
research, scientific investigation, mediated decision-making,
and other forms of community defined means of assistance
in the following areas:
- Shared visioning and asset mapping
- Sustainable community strategic planning
- Sustainable community economic development
- The Natural Step strategy development
- Sustainable urban revitalization
- Climate change action planning
- Sustainable water resources management
- Watershed land-use design
- Coastal zone adaptive management
- Training in sustainability understanding
and practice
Sustainability
Now! is positioned to serve as a think
tank, conveyor of doers, and facilitator of solutions.
Our activities are defined by the acronym SUSTAIN.
- Solicit
ideas, problems, and/or situations to consider;
- Understand,
analyze and define by pooling expertise,
information, and resources;
- Synthesize ideas into stakeholder options
(integrated, holistic approach) and
multi-faceted action agenda;
- Train stakeholders and professionals
to enhance their understanding and
practice in sustainability;
- Assemble experts across disciplines
that can promote actions;
- Integrate
science, organizations, agencies, and resources
(partners)
across boundaries;
and
- Negotiate processes and roles for
a holistic solution, providing
support and coordination
for partners.
